PROLOGUE
Silence. Deafening silence. That’s when I realized something was wrong. Not even the rustling of a leaf could be heard. My heart pounding, I gathered my skirts and ran. I didn’t run away, I ran towards the danger. Oh God, please...My breathing was getting erratic, I was falling over the overgrown roots and tree barks and still, I ran. I was gasping for air by the time I came upon him.
I could feel the moment my heart dropped to my stomach. It was as though the world had stopped, just me and him, the clearing....and the blood. Oh, the blood. I’d never seen so much blood flow from one person.
I inched closer, afraid of what I’d find. Don't let him be dead please, I prayed. I bent down a little unsteadily and fell forward on his chest. He wasn't moving. Maybe I was too panicked. I raised my head, and placed my hand on his face, slowly inching it down to that tiny vein in his throat that’d tell me what I wanted to know. At first, there was nothing, then I felt it. A tiny pulse, that came every half a minute. It was weak but it was something.
I breathed out the air I didn’t realise I’d been holding. And with it, the return of my senses. I had to stop the bleeding. Quickly, I opened his tunic and lifted his undershirt. His whole chest was covered in blood. There was no way I was going to see the source of his bleeding, I would have to feel my way through. I ran my hand across his stomach, slowly...like the caress of a lover's touch, feeling for any opening. Right under his left breast, I found it.
It was a long deep line that started from his chest to across his back. I quickly tore a piece off my outer skirt and pressed it against the wound, hoping to stop whatever was left of his blood from flowing out.
I caught the movement of his eyes before I heard the light whisper. I could always feel his presence, even when he treads light as a feather, the mischievous glint in his eyes and the smirk on his face that always made my heart skip a beat. I love this man. My Elis.
“I love you...”, he whispered, as his eyes closed against the rising sun.
And that’s when I noticed the huge boar that lay dead 10 feet away.
